The 31 stories in this collection are compiled from "The Virago Book of Ghost Stories: The Twentieth Century" (two volumes, & ) and "The Virago Book of Victorian Ghost Stories" (), all by some of the best-known female authors of the supernatural, including Edith Wharton, Rosemary Pardoe, Joan Aiken, and Charlotte Brontë/5(12).
The Virago Book of Ghost Stories combines two of my reading passions. First, of course, there are the ghost stories themselves, and these are, as Richard Dalby states in his preface, "arranged in chronological order," making for a great way to watch the development of the "form of the ghost story" over the last years/5.
